Please don't get me wrong: I'm not against tubes or tapes. I've been reading many threads and posts around this subject, and I felt like this had to be said. Let's just not make it a rule as some folks here sometimes try to do. I've heard great records recorded without any tubes or tapes - and of course tons of great records recorded on tape and/or tube gear. In a nutshell, my point is: some genres of music (or perhaps some songs within a genre) simply don't need tape or tube.

The wisdom lies in knowing how to pick among what you have available, and most of all - know how to use it. There are so many pieces of wonderful gear out there for us to use. If someday I come across some tube gear or tape machine I'll certainly give it a shot, and if it sounds good I'll surely use it (obviously). A personal preference, others will of course disagree. 99% of the time I'm mixing through the T-Racks Pultec just because of that low boost which I can't get anywhere else. In my experience the same line of thinking goes for most tube emulations, except for the Pultec-clones cause I just love the lows on Pultec, and I use it A LOT to give electronic basslines some beef. Only some acoustic guitars were tracked in the Studer. We used the 3124s on about 80% of that recording. After some days of tracking, our best sounds were coming out of a API 3124. They had some Thermionics tube gear as well.
Some months ago I was recording a band that built their own studio around a Studer tape-machine. They were very useful when I was mixing a reggae act last month. Bootsy did a great job on Ferric and also on his EQ. They really add some nice harmonic content and gentle dynamics, giving a hint of what would be the real tape sound. On the other hand, they are awesome when it comes to genres like rock, jazz and other "organic" stuff. For example, when I'm producing eletronic music 90% of the time that kind of plug simply doesnt sound good, unless I'm using it as a special effect on some weird synth lead or a drum loop. Oh, before that, have this in mind: most of the jobs I get are electronic music-related, so take that in mind when judging my opinion.īoth Ferox and Ferric are great plugs (and they are FREE), but they should be used within a context. Sharing some experiences about the tape emulations:
A bit offtopic but IMO at least somehow related.
